Self-Determined Communal Living

House of Mkeka’s purpose is to model an innovative approach to equitable housing, community care, aging in place and safety for Black families through living and working together communally, autonomously and sustainably in an 100% Black-owned pocket neighborhood.

How It All Started… “Let us Take You Back, Way Back, Back Into Time”

In 2020, our families were faced with the systemic isolation of a worldwide pandemic, the murder of George Floyd, Rekia Boyd (and so many named/unnamed) and the realities of lack of safety and community care for Black women, seniors and children. Our families gathered to provide each other mutual aid with the resources we had available but also began to ask the question “How do we support and protect each other while raising babies, aging in place and manifesting Black autonomy, pleasure and joy in our lifetimes?” The House of Mkeka was envisioned! We share our journey and our strategies toward self determined communal living here …
