About Us

Who Are We?

House of Mkeka is a collective of eight Black family households committed to self-determined communal living through the development of an 8 cottage “pocket neighborhood” in Seattle, WA. Our families are multigenerational and span from the ages of 89 years young to 4 years old.

What is Our Purpose?

House of Mkeka’s purpose is to model an innovative approach to equitable housing, community care, aging in place and safety for Black families through living and work together communally, autonomously and sustainably in an 100% Black-owned pocket neighborhood.

We hope to honor the legacy of our ancestors, inspire hope for the present and a brighter future for the many generations to come by training other families to build self-determined communities by organizing through a Black, queer, feminist and anti-racist framework.

We are currently looking for a land deal or a combination of land deals that equal 1 acre of land in Seattle’s Madison, Madison Park, Madison Valley, U District, Laurelhurst, Ravenna, Magnuson Park or Central District. Disability accessibility and proximity to Seattle Children’s Hospital and medical clinics are of highest value to our collective.
